Neither Mancunian, nor orchestral, Manchester Orchestra are from Atlanta and play loud/quiet grunge. Nothing new then, but fans of the Pixies and Weezer will love it. ‘I’ve Got Friends’ is a winning maelstrom of piano, white noise, power chords and primal screaming and, as with ‘Shake It Out’, has a nice melodic sensibility beneath its Black Sabbath horns. The excellent ‘Pride’ sounds like the heavens-shaking heathen rock of Jane’s Addiction and they pull a similar trick to Jane’s’ album ‘Ritual De Lo Habitual’ by turning down the volume on the ‘second side’ for a string of more delicate songs such as the Shins-y ‘My Friend Marcus’ and the quirky pop of ‘Tony The Tiger’. That one is grrrrrreat! Sorry, I’ll go.
