Push past the empty pizza boxes and ash-filled Coke cans in the bedroom and you’ll find them. They’ll be there – Bernhard Kirsch and Dragan Espenschied – sat on a mattress in front of their ancient computers, bashing out budget Euro-rave fodder ten years after acid house affected their lives and, against all the odds, doing it in style.
style – and you have to wonder when exactly they last left the house or, for that matter, heard a dance record which wasn’t by Altern-8. Time and modern technology may have passed Bodenstdndig 2000 by, but this German duo are still determined to exhaust all the musical possibilities from their battered Ataris. And on this endearingly crude evidence, there aren’t many.
Rather, tracks like ‘Tiefe Entspannung’ and ‘Party Ganze Nacht’ solder the Pacman theme-tune on to Jive Bunny‘s ‘Old Skool Acid House Megamix’ without a whiff of irony, while ‘Weihnachten Auf Hawaii’ and ‘Saureschnauze’ are byte-sized karaoke folk songs crooned by helium-raddled office workers.
If it sounds dumb and helplessly naive, that’s because it is, and one day, the present will catch up with Bodenstdndig 2000. In the meantime, theirs, just, is a vision worth sharing.
