So, after the “totally acrimonious” split from her last band, self-styled one-woman tattoo-and-mascara-tornado Tairrie B returns with [a]My Ruin[/a], her first solo project. After her last two embarrassingly OTT rap-metal bands, Manhole and Tura Satana, you might expect more of the same: over-indignant shouty sloganeering that’s wearing rather than shocking; Alanis with ripped-to-fuck vocal chords and a bigger penchant for religious imagery.

crop up. It’s certain that none of this would have happened with Tura Satana.

Sure, sometimes the cringe factor shoots through the roof – when Tairrie roars, “Today is an oatmeal day/I feel like a monster babe” on ‘Monster’, or “I’m your scary teddy bear” on ‘Bright Red Scream’ – but overall, ‘Speak & Destroy’ is the most complete thing she’s ever done. Don’t be afraid.
