Tonight, it seems, we are the evil ones. We build ’em up, see; start the fan club, stoke the fire. Then we slap ’em down. Or so the brace of mediocre bands who fail to progress past their first good idea so often choruses. Sometimes, though, there is no choice. Especially when [a]Immense[/a] – three young Bristolians and a 50-something forensic pathologist on guitar, no less – present us with this listing shanty town built from pre-worn sounds, and thrust a mallet in our fist.
It’s true, instrumental firestorms like ‘E Flat Sonic Boom‘ blaze as bright as they did last spring on [a]Immense[/a]’s first EP. And ‘Antro-Lateral Approach‘ does sneak some delightful scratching and horror-score piano into the post-rock plot. Even ‘Death To The Gremlins‘, [a]Immense[/a]’s thinly-veiled diss of their immediate superiors Mogwai, is a love letter penned on immaculately plucked strings. So all is not lost.
What’s missing though, is the lust to genuinely leave Mogwai for dead. And the gear to do the job. Instead of a cocked weapon, [a]Immense[/a] come armed with bursts of sub-Fridge jazz, sampled chat (the misnamed ‘Football Chant‘), and lengthy, unfocused prog noodles.
