*N Sync/Britney Spears/Sandy & Junior/Aaron Carter: Rock In Rio

Britney gets booed and *N Sync turn into The Bee Gees on the fourth day of Rock In Rio...

The first attraction of the teen night at Rock In Rio is the kid Aaron Carter, brother to Backstreet Boy Nick. With a set no longer than 20 minutes, he performs four songs, the whole performance looking like your nephew’s birthday party. Only a few of the kids are impressed.

That’s because, of course, everyone’s waiting for Brazil’s number one teen band, siblings Sandy & Junior, who bring 30 dancers on with them and a massive stage structure with a spectacle to put the ‘gringos’ to shame. Sandy & Junior are followed by Five, who don’t quite manage to lift the crowd. Well rehearsed, with routines perfectly performed, there’s still something missing from the show.

It’s time, then, for Britney to top up the hysteria. And she certainly tries. But, during the performance of ‘Lucky’, an American flag appears on the stage screen, triggering the Brazilian crowd to boo for a long time. Of course, that doesn’t stop the teen queen spouting all the usual trite pop rubbish, of how happy she is to see all those beautiful faces out there, how blessed she has been, blah blah. In the end, the parents are dancing more than the kids.

The main attraction of the night makes it onstage over two hours later than scheduled, but it was worth waiting for the best performance of the night. The

boys of *N Sync seem really pleased to be there and give an impeccable performance, greeting the crowd in Portuguese, and letting the audience decide some of the songs they’ll play (‘Tearin’ Up My Heart’ wins).

They also pay homage to the Bee Gees with a medley of a cappella numbers. Even though most of the berserk fans in the crowd don’t know who the Bee Gees are, they love to hear Lance, Justin, JC, Joey and Chris singing anything. An hour and a half later, *N Sync say goodbye with – hey! – ‘Bye Bye Bye’, leaving the crowd happy and closing Rock In Rio’s fourth night.
