For most, the thought of a folk-rock opera is horrifying. But what if a tale of medieval murder and abduction were put in the hands of riff monsters Black Mountain or, dare we imagine it, My Chemical Romance? Ye olde world would be set fair alight and, frankly, things would be pretty ace. Sadly, it’s The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy who’s writing the script, inspired by British folk-rock but driven by weedy American indie. Lest we forget, this is a man who penned a song called ‘Chimbley Sweep’ without conceding how daft that sounds, and this overblown opus about a mythical Margaret is equally wet and earnest. In fact, it sounds like Death Cab For Cutie covering Fairport Convention.
