The Twilight Sad – ‘No One Can Ever Know’

This record plods to a halt

Bands known for their deafening live show can often struggle on record, where one’s ability to make a ear-bending racket is hamstrung by the hand on the volume knob. Mind you, The Twilight Sad have never seemed to find this a problem – until now. Y’see, with ‘No One Can Ever Know’ they’ve turned down their blaringly loud, poetic post-rock for Depeche Mode isolation (‘Sick’) and industrial synth (‘Kill It In The Morning’). That’s all well and good, but by Christ, it plods. Sure, James Graham’s lyrics still possess a grisly bite but, with such little bark, this album will ultimately fall on deaf ears.
