Album Review: Usher – ‘Raymond V Raymond’ (RCA)

The R&B star's inner demons get the better of him

Six albums in and our favourite crazy-legged R&B star is obviously having some sort of episode. In the past year he has divorced his wife and perhaps most shockingly of all, foisted squeaky-voiced mini crooner Justin Bieber on the tweens of the world. An unforgivable act ordinarily, but it’s hard to hold it against a man responsible for some of the most awesome rumpy crooning of the past decade. ‘Raymond V Raymond’ finds the singer in an emotional headspin, and when he channels it here he produces some of his darkest and most hypnotic soul-pop to date. But sadly there’s quite a bit of forgettable bravado babble too – hardly original.
