“Dude, you really need to listen to Wilco.” Back in 2004, you couldn’t pass an American backpacker in the street without having this recommendation foisted upon you. Given the source, we ignored them and instead plunked for Bright Eyes’ bleatings. It was a mistake of course – Wilco are the true soul of American alt.country. ‘Sky Blue Sky’ returns to the original formula with which they made their name, rather than their last couple of more experimental albums. But this is of minor concern when the songs are this sumptuous; ‘Impossible Germany’ recalls one of Steely Dan’s more lucid moments, while the title track is a porch-side ballad soaked in pedal steel and Jeff Tweedy’s wounded daydreaming. Dude, you really need to listen to Wilco.
