The Vaccines And Everything Everything Made Music With The Teenage Cancer Trust Yesterday

Yesterday The Vaccines and Everything Everything played the Royal Albert Hall, alongside opening act Pumarosa, for a gig in support of the Teenage Cancer Trust. Ahead of the gig, they joined a group of teens from the Trust’s units, who were taking part in a songwriting workshop inside the building. We caught up with both bands after the workshop and ahead of their performances, to talk through their experience.

“They’re doing a workshop every day,” Vaccines frontman Justin Young explained, “where teenagers come in and write and perform a song from scratch, so we went to hang out with them while they were mid-rehearsal. But they’d basically already nailed it, it was pretty impressive.”

As part of the workshop, held upstairs in the Elgar Room of the RAH, the teens were asked to write and perform a Vaccines-inspired song and an Everything Everything-inspired one, EE frontman Jonathan Higgs told us. For Everything Everything, that involved elements of 2015 single ‘Distant Past’, while The Vaccines’ tribute was named ‘Here We Go’.

Young added, “Their teacher, the guy who was teaching them how to play, warned us that they’d written this ‘pastiche’ of a Vaccines song. They played it and I was like, ‘That’s basically just sounds like every Vaccines song ever, they’ve hit the nail on the head there.’”
