The Duke Spirit

The Step And The Walk

The tribal drums, the menacing fuzz bass, the two-chord Stooges/Spacemen 3 progressions, Liela Moss’ angel-with-a-dirty-face coo… on this taster from their long-overdue second album the Duke’s song remains resolutely the same, save for some subtle tweaking by QOTSA knob-twiddler Chris Goss. Still, it’s a fine formula and suitable preparation for the more adventurous delights contained within the Joshua Tree-birthed ‘Neptune’. “Without joy, joy, joy and the rain/I could feel forever the same”, goes the chorus which, this early in ’08, makes perfectly nonsensical sense to us.
