Why I Love: Michael Kiwanuka On His Teenage Skateboarding Obsession

Michael Kiwanuka loves the culture and skill behind skateboarding. When he was a teen it was a way of being both part of a club and being an individual: he used to do it on the South Bank and in Muswell Hill. He describes it as a way of expressing yourself and choosing a style. “Even now I’m still really obsessed with it,” he tells NME in the video above. “I don’t really skate any more and I was never that good but I still love the whole culture and style” – baggy jeans and baggy hoodies gave way to skinny jeans and punk styles. This was in the days before camera phones, so sadly there’s no footage of a teenage Kiwanuka landing his best trick – a heel flip – but he still keeps up with it by following the best skaters on Instagram. That’s people like Brian Anderson, Ed Templeton, Andrew Reynolds and Tom Penny.
