BLUR SPEAK: 'We are reuniting for Hyde Park gig' – Exclusive

Damon Albarn and co tell NME 'it just felt it was right again'

Blur are reforming to play live next year, NME can exclusively reveal.

The full line-up – Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree – will play their first gigs together since guitarist Coxon quit the band in 2002.

Speaking only to NME in a world exclusive joint interview, Albarn and Coxon explained that they had put their differences behind them and were looking forward to playing live in 2009.

"It just felt it was right again," declared Albarn of Blur's return. "It somehow feels like there's something for us to do again, we're not completely useless or pointless, we've got a reason to exist."

Coxon agreed, explaining the band were "making public what's been going on a little bit privately. For the benefit of the fans and those interested we can say that something's on the cards".

What is on the cards is a headlining show in Hyde Park, London on Friday, July 3.

Tickets will go on sale at 9am (GMT) this Friday (December 12). To check the availability of Blur tickets and get all the latest listings, go to NME.COM/GIGS now, or call 0871 230 1094.

See Blur.co.uk for more information.

There are also rumours of further dates, including a possible appearance at the 2009 Glastonbury festival.

However, while the band refused to confirm any other shows, Albarn promised fans around the UK that the band would be announcing some more shows.

"We'll do something in London because that seems sensible," he said, "but we're also playing in other parts of the country working up to there."

You can watch a video of Blur talking about their reunion on NME.COM now.

For the full exclusive joint interview with Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon get this week's issue of NME (cover pictured), on newsstands in London this afternoon, and available across the UK tomorrow (December 10).

In it the duo discuss how they buried the hatchet, why they decided to reconvene Blur, what songs they expect to play next year, and reveal more of their future plans.

Meanwhile, head to the NME Office Blog to nominate the songs you'd most like to hear at Blur's Hyde Park gig.

You can also visit NME.COM/PHOTOS for a special photo tribute to Blur.

"It just felt it was right again," declared Albarn of Blur's return. "It somehow feels like there's something for us to do again, we're not completely useless or pointless, we've got a reason to exist."Oh yes, because the fact that Live Nation offered them a million quid didn't come into it at all.(FACT)

excellent news! please play Scotland, and looking forward to seeing you at some point. A great present for Blue fans. Just one question though - will this mean that only 'battery in your leg' will get an airing from the Think Tank LP?

Ha ha ed2005, great present for Blue fans. Fan's of Blue might have to wait a bit longer before THEY annouce a tepid comeback that won't work. Or maybe you meant fan's of Blur who have been blue for 8 years because Blur were inactive - well you're right - best news since... well since Damon albarn annouced he's recording a new Gorrillaz album!

Great News! Although it does seem they're only getting back together to play the gigs and there's no suggestion anywhere that they may be heading into the studio. I think they could still make some great music together judging by Damon and Graham's individual projects over the last 8 years. Still, The Verve live was one of my highlihgts of 2008 (and I haven't even bothered with Forth) so there's every chance Blur will be my highlight of '09. I just hope I can get tickets.

I'll be shocked if they could fill Hyde Park. They only had about 6 good songs, Coffee and Tv being the best of the bunch. And they would sound rubbish in a stadium. The other 3 nobs in the band must have been broke and begged Damon to reform. I guess when you dont sell many albums you have to try and scratch a living somehowDont expect any Take Thatesque legendary comeback!

The best band of the last 20 years get back together. I was at the last gig in 2000 and they will always be the ultimate and best band band of the Britpop era.

This is the best day of my life hearing that blur is performing together again. I mean after Graham left in 2002, I hoping and praying that this day will come and it did. This is have to be an early x-mas present for me and for all the blur's fan from all around the world.

I've been waiting for the day Graham would come back and blur would make another amazing record! Last time I saw them, Damon said that would be it...guess not :) This news made my life!

great band, lets hope they work the wrinkles and bad hips. Timed very well. Saved themselves 10 years of bad power chord drone unlike their Oasis contemporaries.

Dec 10, 2008

ahh that's mint.i was always a bit more of an oasis fan tbh.but if blur can regroup and get back together who knows? maybe a libertines reunion is possible.i think it's nice to see bands get back together. especially if they do it out of general liking o eachother and not just to make money.

ant_klaxon

Dec 10, 2008

now no ones going to talk about oasis!!BLUR FOR GLASTO!!

jezza1961

Dec 10, 2008

Best band of their generation ? Hardly ! They were a second rate brit pop act held together by Damon's thirst for publicity .... and now embarking on a third rate comeback as the other band members solo efforts fail and the Alex James book sales flop ! I wouldn't step out of my house to see this shower.

great stuff...but a pulp reunion would be a million times better! theyre the true britpop legends in my opinion! :)

tonyk

Dec 10, 2008

I think Damon writes more interesting music without Graham and don't see what all the fuss is about Blur reforming. Think Tank was the best Blur album by far , without Graham, and Gorillaz etc has been far more original than Park Life or Grahams solo stuff

mattd190

Dec 10, 2008

Dec 10, 2008

This explaines all the Oasis hate on here, full of Blur fanboys

lushgirl

Dec 10, 2008

well i do think that damon's music are much more funny when graham left the band.but in my opinion, sometimes we really need sone"serious music",and i think graham's music is also very great, for he transfered some spiritual things.

wes79

Dec 10, 2008

This is such amazing news! This will be the best Blur gig since Mile End Stadium all those years ago! I still remember Damon dedicating Globe Alone to the man pressing the button to turn the light on and off at the top of Canary Wharf which was in the distance and singing Girls & Boys in the pouring rain and the hamburgers hanging from the stage! - Good times!

Dec 10, 2008

Oh my god! I am fucking gutted! The one year I finally manage to get glasto tickets sorted and it looks like this bunch of shite are gonna be there! I'm devastated. And i'm sure there are many many many more people who feel the sam, but they probbaly won't write on here just cos they couldn't bring themselves to even read such tragic news!Blur for glastonbury? Refund for glastonbury!

albarnaholic

Dec 10, 2008

Tonyk is all-right, Think Tank is the best blur album, and the sound without Graham has improved a lot, but we miss see them transfering this britpop feeling, like Sunday Sunday, it's not only for music quality or genius, is...

lushgirl

Dec 10, 2008

well i think THINK TANK is totally different froms other albums, but i won't deny that it's one of blur's most wonderful albums, cuz you can see that damon was trying to be more mature, that's really very great.but i think after so many years' separation, these guys know very well how to cooperate to make wonderful music.i am looking forward to their new album.

poptart81

Dec 11, 2008
