Pete Doherty jailed for 14 weeks

Spokesperson tells NME.COM he's 'looking at appeal'

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty has been jailed for 14 weeks for failing to turn up to probation hearings on time and drug use.

Doherty attended West London Magistrates Court today (April 8), where Judge Davinder Lachar handed the singer/guitarist the sentence.

A spokesperson for the court said that Doherty had been jailed for "breach of time keeping, non-compliance of his order and using different drugs".

Doherty had been given a suspended jail sentence for possession of drugs and driving illegally in October last year. His supervision order required him to make regular visits to court for progress reports, as well as take part in a drug rehabilitation programme. He was threatened with up to four months in jail if he broke the law during this period.

A spokesperson for Doherty told NME.COM that he was looking into grounds for appeal.

Doherty is expected to serve one month under current rules but should he complete the full three and half months of his sentence he will not only miss a solo show at the Royal Albert Hall in London (April 26), but the Glastonbury (June 27-29) festival, which he is due to headline the Park Stage.

His label, Parlophone, explained the solo show will be postponed but it "is due to be rescheduled and all tickets will be valid for the new date once it has been announced. Peter was very much looking forward to the show and would like to offer his sincerest apologies to all his fans and all those concerned".

I've had the pleasure of seeing Pete Doherty a few times both with Babyshambles and on his own and he is a fantastic musician but in his personal life the bloke is an idiot and it is about time a magistrate has had the balls to hand him a prison sentence!!Hopefully he will be out in time for Glastonbury though!!!

oh pete, you silly silly boy. i hope he still makes glastonbury. weather he acts like a fool or not, hes still one of the best musical inspirations of the last 10 years and libertines will always be the best band of the 00's. besides hes a proper front man, getting messy on drugs, sleeping with models and gatting umpteen week jail sentences. i thaught to be proper front man that was standard

Finally the British justice system take action! I love Pete's music but the amount of times he has escaped jail is ridiculous and not a good example to his fans of how the law works - love his music, not his lifestyle. I'm gutted he won't be about to play the Royal Albert Hall but look forward to his return, let's hope it's not too long.

God Pete, when will you ever learn. He will get off with it anyway - At least im hoping he will. His solo show at Glastonbury last year was truely amazing, as were his solo shows at the Rhythm Factory recently. In fact, lets tell Jay-Z to sling his hook and get Pete Headlining.

At long last! The talentless twat is behind bars where he belongs. He is only 'famous' for his drug life, not his music, just like that ugly talentless waste of space Amy Winehouse. You sad fans who actually waste money to see these talentless people (not even turn up most of the time!) in concert should get a clue and wake up to REAL musicians and songwriters and bands who dont live in the tabloids, and who instead let their music and classic songwriting and LPs and live performances do the talking - like Pearl Jam, Brad, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Biffy Clyro, Jimmy Eat World, Them Is Me, Gin Blossoms, Incubus... REAL bands, REAL musicians, NOT druggy lowlife talentless idiots!

In response to highwaycompanion's message...According to Peter Brown's book on the Beatles, it was Bob Dylan who introduced the Beatles to marijuana. Dylan went through some profound drug experiences during 1964-5. According to biographer Tony Scaduto: 'He … tried just about everything he could to ‘open his head’ ' Plus many of Dylan’s songs were about drugs, including “Lay Down Your Weary Tune,” “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” and “Mr. Tambourine Man.”ALSO:In Peter Bogdanovich's documentary on Tom Petty: "He and the Heartbreakers describe almost getting arrested for drugs in Europe, and a clip from German television shows glassy-eyed bass player Ron Blair somehow pulling through a song despite swallowing a stash of hashish."Yeah. Long live 'real' bands. 'REAL' musicians.t***t

alright. so pete's finally gone to jail.you do know he's been in there before, in the daysof the libertines. But you lot who seem to think he's thickand a twat, your the lot who need to stop reading trash like the daily mirror and the sun which continue to slag him off for the smallest of things and i can almost guarantee these papers will exaggerate on this story in the news tommorow. The man's got a greattalent and has become the voice of a nation. So he takes drugs, i've seen babyshambles when pete was completely sober, you seem to think he's continuously taking drugs, 'of his face', recently he's going in the right direction, im dissapointed he's gone to jail and i'm not saying he doesn't deserve it, it's been a long time coming but hopefully this jail sentence will make him realise he's making more friends than enemies.just because he takes drugs doesn't mean he's got no talent, infact he's done a fucking good job to keep himself alive.it's that amy winehouse 'pop-trash, no-one's looking at me so i'll take some drugs', she deserves to go to jail as much as he does, but due to this country being brainwashed by cheesy pop crap pete doesnt get a say. even when winehouse cocked up it was pete's fault just because he was close to the bar where she overdosed at the time. i love pete, he's an inspiration, yes i'm only 16, but what different does that make? 'scene-kids', hopefully pete will realise in a world full of hypocrites he'll never win.. and he'll continue to go in the right direction when he gets out.

gazmassie

Apr 8, 2008

So out of the closet come all the Pete and Amy Bashers - The truth of the matter is that they are both fucking brilliant at what they do. So They take drugs?.. Is there anyone on the planet naive enough to think that The Beatles, The Stones, Bowie, etc etc werent off their heads the majority of the time. The 'setting a bad example' phrase is so over used. If somebody uses the excuse of "I take drugs because Pete Doherty / Amy Winehouse does" then there is obviously an underlying problem in the first place. Its my personal choise not to take drugs but i couldnt give a shit if Pete Doherty does or not. However he has flaunted the law too many times and deserves this punishment but i for one cant wait for him to be back performing. In our current musical climate - where our biggest export is an X Factor winner - I would chose Pete and Amy everytime.

sorry i just re-read the article and it answers the questions i was asking. i think jsc1982 is wrong, it's not just teenagers who enjoy listening to doherty, it's people who can identify with his music and lyrics. he isn't someone who tried to be a rebel but his drug habit obviously has got the better of him, i just hope he can do his time, get out and start fresh.he's a good person.

I didn't use to like the bloke, just too much tabloid shit going on, then out of couriosity I listen to Babyshambles last album and I love it. Shame for Glastonbury but few weeks in jail won't hurt him and he deserves them. There'll be other occasions to see him live anyway...

Totally disagree with HighWayCompanion and Spenny44. Sending Pete down has never worked before and I doubt it'll work this time. As far as the people who really appreciate his music are concerned, he's really talented and is one of the best songwriters we've seen in years. It's so selfish of you 'fans' to think about the concerts now... If Pete cannot be forced to stay in rehab, then let them keep him in jail, maybe he will reflect on his bloody life. I just hope any 'friends' won't smuggle drugs in there. This man could do so much good to the world, and instead he's ruining himself. I still hope he will bring his life back on track. Good luck Pete!

Apr 9, 2008

In reply to peterpiper - YES The Beatles, Bob Dylan, TP have taken drugs in their career - the difference is that they aren't low life talentless scum who think they are above the law just cos they have celebrity girlfriends in Kate Moss (herself a talentless waste of space), and who dont leave their fans waiting at gigs while they 'shoot up' or are too out of it to even turn up at all, or turn up and are so out of it they cant string two words together. Yeah, Winehouse and Doherty are pure class compared to the classic 60s legends who used drugs to further their music and have enlightened experiences from. Dont think we'll see a Pete Doherty tribute concert in 30 years like Dylan had, or him being around in 30 years, playing to sell out crowds year in year out and still making amazing LPs like TP and the Heartbreakers.

ontheroad11b

Apr 9, 2008

i sincrely hope pete gets detox meds in the jail. dopesickness is worst. if not he doesnt get any methadone or benzos he is dopesick as all hell at this very moment. in the end, the drug always catches up to addicts. a 3 + months sentence isnt that bad, with one day at a day. i really doubt he will end up complete the whole sentence. they will reduce it somehow. i'm sure he will have privlages. getting locked up was bound to happen. fans of pete can't do anything but wait and see what will turn out.

Tom Petty, Gin Blossoms, Pearl Jam, Jimmy Eat World, INCUBUS??Were I to compile a list with those bands being included, it would be titled the lamest bands of all time. Are you serious mate? You listen to that trite garbage? They're all American crap bands. Jimmy Eat World hasn't a song to listen to, Incubus doesn't know what genre they even want to be and have helped spawn other crap bands, Pearl Jam haven't made a song worth anyones time since the 90s, Gin Blossoms = 1 hit wonder. Only acts I'll give props to are Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, although the latter's voice makes my skin crawl.Hey Jealousy anyone? (highwaycompanion)

I was so mad that he didn't show up in the Forum in the Kentish town gig to support The Sonics, I travelled half a globe to stand in line in the cold London street in snow just to see him, he didn't have the courtesy to be professional to show up.... Since he ditched gigs erratically, perhaps jail visit is far more reliable to see him perform, that will be really Johnny Cash-esque.

Big wow he is going for a spell in jail. Deserves longer if anything. Obviously nobody can account for peoples tastes and every person is entitled to their own opinion but I can't believe people are blinded by his image as a "rock star". Glastonbury would be none the poorer for his non appearance. Perhaps if he gets clean his performances will improve and songs will consistently hit higher levels. He creates the odd gem here and there, but for the most part is highly over-rated.

To Highwaycompanion: Incubus and Jimmy Eat World? So they are classic bands are they...Pete Doherty is only famous for his drug use to people who only read about him in the paper. If people took the time to listen to his music i'm sure, like Amy Whinehouse, that they would find out that there is a lot of talent involved in it. I'm not a big fan of Amy Whinehouse, but I can respect her music and i don't let artists drug use get in the way of my opinion of their music. P.S Dylan was hooked on speedballs

you gotta feel sorry for the guy, drug addiction ain't funny and it it's even unfunnier when the combined music press and tabloids give him the oxygen that puts him there in the first place. leave the guy the fuck alone and let him beat his demons. and certainly don't fucking release some trite tribute to him if he ever kills himself. pete and a lot of other people need to fucking grow up, and fast.

Skybluepancho, your words are music to my ears. Yes I am a teenage reader of NME. Got a problem? These people commenting on here calling him this and that, obviously read tabloids. It was only a few months ago that The Times were praising Doherty for his lyrics and his success with the Libertines and Babyshambles. Maybe his critics should drop their copies of The Sun and the likes, and pick up a biography of pete doherty or maybe the books of albion, and really try to understand him. Because, you are in no place to criticise anything unless you properly understand it. Maybe his time in prison will help him sort himself out, and maybe make another great record like 'pentonville'.

jlong5000

Apr 9, 2008

i'm an american. its been my understanding that this man since the dawning of his career has been blitzed by the media. This is usually the point when you start hearing something about them over here. Absolutely amazing. The libertines did infact define the beginning of the century. They were completely authentic in all aspects. They didn't have a cloud over them like the strokes would have (in reference to their background). I'm not one to argue on web forums. Its rather juvenile from my point of view. I'll never see the man in concert. Though it would be fantastic, i'm not overly concerned with it. I don't care how often the man shoots crack or heroine. Thats his call. People argue about the goodness of babyshambles and compare them to DPT and all that shit...they're all good. They are bands from two people that DEFINED the beginning of an era. Look at all the bands around now. Look at all the idiots walking around in trilby's and skinny pants. Thank Pete for that and stop shooting the man down. What Noel and Liam were to people growing up in the 90s, Pete and Carl are to this new generation. Jail may do him some good. Maybe not. Its all up to him. If nothing else, I can see a 14 week prison stretch giving him a good few things to write about, and at the end of the day, isn't his music what we are all most concerned with?

Backtoreality01

Apr 9, 2008

I cannot believe it when people say Pete is talantless. They must have never heard any of his music. I saw babyshambles live in Bournemouth and they were amazing. However I can understand why people say it's about time, he has had too many chances. I thought he was beggining to get better... Shame.

I'm no fan of Pete or his music but I do feel for him with his problems.Let us however, get one thing straight.....he is not a musical genius or a legend! In comparison to people like Noel Gallagher or Damon Albarn for example, Pete has achieved nothing compared to them. He hasn't even written a song that will go down in rock history so how can he be a legend? His problems get more coverage or talked about than his music does and if he was a musical genius, surely it would be his music that was talked about more. The only people that think he is a legend are the young-un's. One day they will look back and wonder why they were into him. Will his music still be talked about in 10 - 15 years time like Noel's is for example!!?? I think not. Case closed!!!!!

Apr 9, 2008

I agree with highwaycompanion, but maybe a list of classic bands would have been relevant than his fave bands. Bands such as Led Zep, The Who, The Doors, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Stooges etc etc, all took drugs, but still managed to create classic albums and tour endlessly, which in my opinion, Pete hasnt done since leaving the Libs (who made one of the greatest albums in "up the bracket"). It is good that he finally gets jailed after slipping through so many times for things ordinary people would have been jailed for instantly. Hope the prison time does him good and he finally writes another classic rather than what he's been coming out with in recent times.

It's funny how some people blame the media for the Pete haters yet this is hypocritical as it is the same media that painted him as a genius in the first place and all you mugs just jumped on the bandwagon. I see very little evidence of genius, Up the bracket was one of my favourite albums, the self titled follow up was average at best and all of his work with babyshambles has been mediocre. I was disappointed when the lib's split up but it was probably the right time to do it as they clearly couldn't live up to the hype surrounding them. I think Pete's writing talent is questionable as he often uses cliche and lines stolen from nursery rhymes etc which sound like they were used for the sake of it rather than because they fit a song...Oh and I seem to remember his biggest cheers at his last appearnace at Glastonbury was when he was performing Libertines classics. Can't believe he has so many deluded fans and would love to know what his gigs played to cancelled ratio is yet these people still defend him, He might have his problems but clearly doesn't give a shit about his fans. He should look to the example of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers who probably suffered with addiction as much as any band but still stayed aware of their responsibility to their fans

Who ever suggests that he is talentless clearly doesn't know what they are talking about and I would be interested to know what they think 'talent' is in that case...it's fine not to like his music but claiming that he is a "talentless twat" is just ridiculous. All you have to do is look at the lyrics of song like 'Music When the Lights Go Out' and 'Death on the Stairs' to see that he is true poet.

Ok lets settle the score here, Pete is a crap musician but has a brilliant way with words and is solely responsible for bringing the englishness back into modern day pop music in the 2000s. He is an exciting honest public figure who fails to succumb to the pressures of society and chooses the path of freedom. To all those bashing Pete, stop reading the daily mirror or the sun - they want all of us to be faceless grey consumers in a very bland world and you are extremely naive if you think that rock and roll stars dont do this thing on a very regular basis. The thing which Pete should be condemned for, however, is failing to show up for fans gigs as they have paid good money to see him play and then he shits on their faces by not turning up. Also - he seems to think he is above the law by continually not showing up to court appearances so he deserves this sentence. But he is a good person and i hope he gets out in time for glasto. the end.

pete is a genius and an icon in his own right no matter what is said about him. babyshambles music is not mainstream but it is complete rubish to say Pete has done nothing since the Libs. 1) Down in Albion-brilliant 2) Shotters Nation 3) Several NME Awards 4) Amazing gigs all over the country 5) Hackney Empire 6) Rythym Factory gigs (best gigs of my life) 7) Glastonbury 7) Books of Albion etc etc. The fact is that loads of bands would not exist if it were not for him. Everyone is human and Pete is a troubled person who needs help not hating. People who say negative things about him should take a look at themselves-who do you think you are helping? You make yourselves look ridiculous. Pete, don't worry your real fans will always be here for you. Wishing you stength and courage to help you through this hard time.

In reply to highwaycompanion: "YES The Beatles, Bob Dylan, TP have taken drugs in their career - the difference is that they aren't low life" - no one was comparing their lives, but simply their drug use"talentless" - that's subjective. a lot of people would disagree and say that writing and making Libertines/Babyshambles songs requires at least some modicum of talent, but it's all opinions anyway. "who think they are above the law" - err, wtf? what is he meant to do, throw himself in jail?! in case you didn't know, the court sentences him."just cos they have celebrity girlfriends in Kate Moss" - again wtf? you're making stuff up. since when were you blessed with the ability to read people's mind?"(herself a talentless waste of space)"- you're going all out aren't you."and who dont leave their fans waiting at gigs"- so nothing to do with you then. if they still want to buy tickets it's none of your business. "while they 'shoot up'"- how do you know this, were you with him while he's missing a gig, shooting up?"or are too out of it to even turn up at all, or turn up and are so out of it they cant string two words together."- once again, it's the fans that lose out, so no loss to you or anyone else."Yeah, Winehouse and Doherty are pure class compared to the classic 60s legends who used drugs to further their music and have enlightened experiences from."- err, since when was Winehouse involved? also why are you making more crap up? when did anyone claim they were "pure class compared to the classic 60s legends"?! Sarcastically making a false statement, then attacking it to make a point is not an effective argument."Dont think we'll see a Pete Doherty tribute concert in 30 years like Dylan had, or him being around in 30 years, playing to sell out crowds year in year out and still making amazing LPs like TP and the Heartbreakers."No one said they would. Clear things up for you a bit?

I certainly don't "hate" Pete but I just think that the Genius tag is a huge exaggeration and the hero worship which follows him is excessive. And if someone is able to post a positive note why can't someone post a negative one? it's called debate!! Whether people like it or not he deserves to be in prison and his fans are quite lucky that it hasn't happened before now. I think it's funny that so many people worship a guy who has already gone to prison for burgleing his 'best mate'... yeah real nice guy!! And down in Albion, title track was written whilst in the Libertines and not considered good enough for their album. Babyshambles might be one of the better acts out there at the moment but that just says what a dire situation music is in at the moment..

bloodyhell. i want to say this isnt fair, but it probably is. he had it coming, but its a shame. petes such a genious!!! i hate all the magazines that exploit people like him, they have no regard for his musical talent and it pisses me rite off. and ppl that say he should set an example are talking aload of crap too, he doesnt want to have to set an example, he just wants to play music and get messyy. wheres the problems with that? hes not hurting anyone juust getting off his face is he? anyways, drugs make everyone love eachother.

It's frustrating being a Babyshambles sometimes. I'm very disappointed about the news, but I'm still rooting for Pete. The press/articles covering this story has nothing short of pitiful. I think it's pretty pathetic how people seem take pleasure in his misery. The tabloids are wrong though. People still very so much care about Pete Doherty. God knows I'm one of them. I'd think he would be surprised about how many people are in his corner.

fuck it. who cares. 14 weeks? get out and get wrecked up pete. i say knock down your house, and build a fossil fueled power station just for a laugh, then sell energy to neighbours to buy gear. get a car with a 24 litre engine and leave it on overnight just to show you care about the old c02 issue. in your spare time, get more wrecked i say. people who dont do drugs are usually green planet saving tight fisted hippy socialist bastards who are intolerable bores and drive 1.0l cars with a 25mph sticker in the back. fuck em.

I don't think Pete's talentless. He must've had some talent to get where he did. However, I really think that his music's highly overrated. Don't look back into the sun was no doubt a great pop punk tune, reminiscent of the Buzzcocks' stuff. However, when I heard the Babyshambles album, I thought the whole things was an out-of-tune shambles. For those who think he's a great songwriter, he has a long way to go until he reaches the level of people like Elvis Costello, Lennon & McCarntey. As for his sentence, let him have it. Hopefully this time, he'll learn.
