Echo And The Bunnymen kick off proceedings at South By Southwest 2009. Ian McCulloch’s band played the first show of the week-long music bash, taking the stage at 12.30am, Thursday March 19, at the intimate venue Emo’s Main Room.

Gallows at South By Southwest, Austin, Texas, Wednesday March 18. Vocalist Frank Carter made a shout out to Juliette Lewis, set to play at the same venue later with her band The New Romantiques, then ended the set by placing his bandmates’ microphones in the crowd so they had to leap into the crowds to reach them, with the audience joining in enthusiastically.

Glasvegas thrill a packed house at their first-ever gig at Austin’s South by Southwest Festival. The Glaswegian four-piece began their set 45 minutes late due to technical difficulties experienced by opening band Peter, Bjorn and John, but neither the band nor the crowd let the delay or the cramped conditions at the venue (Vice) dampen their spirits.

Glasvegas, South By Southwest, Wednesday March 18, 2009. The Scots foursome kicked off their 45-minute set with the crowd-pleasing ‘Geraldine’ before launching into ‘Lonesome Swan’. Frontman James Allan hardly said a word throughout the set.

Jarvis Cocker was one of the first acts to take the stage at SXSW 2009. However, he wasn’t playing live. Instead the former Pulp frontman gave a talk entitled ‘Saying The Unsayable’ at the Austin Convention Centre. In addition to being a new music showcase, SXSW is also an industry forum where experts air their views.

Late Of The Pier’s SXSW set included ‘Bathroom Gurgle’ and ‘Space And The Woods’. The set was given a dramatic effect by frontman Sam Eastgate’s shadow being cast large on the venue wall while he played, while his bandmates danced enthusiastically for the duration of the set.
