Clean Bandit formed in Cambridge in 2009 and consist of members Jack Patterson (bass, keyboards, vocals), Luke Patterson (drums), Grace Chatto (cello, vocals) and Milan Neil Amin-Smith (violin). They met while studying at Jesus College, part of the University of Cambridge, where Amin-Smith led a string quartet with Chatto.
The group mix elements of classical music with electronica. The band’s sound was inspired by Jack Patterson recorded Chatto’s performances and remixed them with dance beats. They formed the band after their friend Ssegawa-Ssekintu Kiwanuka wrote the lyrics for ‘Mozart’s House’. They took their name from the translation of a Russian phrase.
In 2012, Clean Bandit released their debut single ‘A+E’. Second single ‘Mozart’s House’ followed in March 2013, reaching Number 17 in the Official Singles Chart. The band achieved their first UK Number One with fourth single ‘Rather Be’, which features dance vocalist Jess Glynne, in January 2014. The track spent four weeks at the top of the chart, selling over 1.1 million copies in that period.
Their debut album ‘New Eyes’ was released on Atlantic Records on May 30 2014 and takes its name from the area of Marseille, Nouailles. The record featured collaborations with Stylo G, Lizzo and Rae Morris amongst others. It was self-produced by Patterson and Chatto and reached Number Three in the Official Albums Chart.
