Beyonce surprise-dropped her new single ‘Formation’ on Saturday night (Feb 6) via Tidal and the internet went wild.
The new track, her first in over a year, features a raspy vocal from Queen Bey and she’s back with something to say.
Set in a post-Katrina New Orleans, Beyonce is making a very definite statement in the ‘Formation’ video. There’s the sinking police car, the little hoodied kid dancing in front of a row of white armed police, the Martin Luther King newspaper with the headline ‘More Than Just a Dreamer’ and the slightly more overt shot of a graffitied wall which simply reads ‘stop shooting us’.
Beyonce’s husband Jay Z has been open about supporting the Black Lives Matter campaign, donating $1.5 million from his streaming service, Tidal, to the organisation which fights for ‘freedom and justice for all black lives.’ The video for ‘Formation’ is a rallying cry to bring more awareness to the cause.
But the politics aside, Bey’s new offering is jam packed with enough classic Beyonce moments to keep the fans happy. From signature dance moves to a cameo from daughter Blue Ivy, we round-up the best bits from ‘Formation’ in seven perfectly-crafted gifs.
When you realise your mum rules the world
And she rides around town like this
Recommended
Because she’s Beyonce, and she slay
If anyone else’s mum tried to dance like this, it would be mortifying
But not Beyonce
She can do whatever the hell she likes
Over and out
