To mark what would have been Amy Winehouse’s 28th birthday today, Tony Bennett has released the video for his duet with her, ‘Body And Soul’. Part of his forthcoming ‘Duets II’ album (which also features him teaming up with Lady Gaga, John Mayer, Faith Hill, Mariah Carey and numerous others), it’s the last thing Amy ever recorded.
And if anyone was left in any doubts over her supreme talent, right up to the end, it’ll fizzle those out from the first few moments. Understated yet powerful and unmistakably Amy, her performance breathes new life into the 1930s classic, doing justice to a standard recorded by Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald and acting as a perfect epitaph for a once-in-a-lifetime kind of girl. Just listen to her pitch perfectly coo her way through lines like ”You know I’m yours, for just the taking… ” and try not to regret the talent we lost.
More than that, though, the video acts as a reminder of how effortless it was for her. This was Amy, smiling and winking throughout, back to what she did best, back doing the thing she loved most.
Proceeds from the song go towards Mitch Winehouse’s Amy Winehouse Foundation, established to help young people with drug and alcohol problems.
