Over the past decade Marvel’s end-credits scenes have become as much part of the film as any of the actual film. Starting in 2008 with Iron Man‘s end-credits scene where Nick Fury visits Tony Stark and asks to discuss the “Avengers Initiative”, they’ve since set up new instalments in the franchise, revealed key details for future films and are eagerly dissected by fans online after they’ve aired. And the end-credits scenes for Captain Marvel are no different.
Nick Fury’s pager is key to the Avengers: Endgame plot
The first of two end-credits scenes features Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Captain America (Chris Evans), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), in what looks like Avengers HQ. They seem to be researching the after effects of Thanos’ snap (where he wiped out 50 percent of all living things), and in their workroom we also see a pager plugged into their computers. It’s the pager that we see Nick Fury using throughout Captain Marvel, and later Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel upgrades it so he can get in touch in “emergencies only”.
The subset of The Avengers don’t know who the pager is contacting, and Rhodes enters the room telling them that the pager is no longer sending a signal, saying it’s “stopped doing whatever the hell it was doing.” As they discuss what to do next, Black Widow makes it clear she wants to get it back online so she can find out who is at the end of the pager as they were clearly important if Fury was calling them (it’s worth remembering that in the Avengers: Infinity War scene we see Fury grab this pager and send a message to Captain Marvel before he disappears in the snap.)
It’s then revealed that the pager has stopped sending a signal because the person it was calling has arrived. We get a few seconds of a determined looking Captain Marvel asking The Avengers “where’s Fury?” before the scene fades to black.
So what does this mean for Avengers: Endgame?
Well in the smaller scale of things it looks like The Avengers are back in New York City at HQ. Last time we saw was them was in Wakanda battling Thanos before the snap, so it looks like in Avengers: Endgame they’ll be returning home. Additionally, it means Captain Marvel definitely survived Thanos’ snap.
It also means that in Endgame there won’t be a dramatic meeting between Captain Marvel and The Avengers, which will ease fans who were worried about the new character’s integration into the franchise. This brief scene is the first time we see her interact with the group of superheroes (aside from Fury), and it sets up her role in the next film, which is sure to be an important one. It could, of course, be a scene taken from Endgame, but if so it still stands that it’s a fairly understated meeting between the characters, which will relieve nervous viewers.
Now we’ll just have wait six weeks for Avengers: Endgame to see what happens.
We see how S.H.I.E.L.D. got a Tesseract
There is also the second Captain Marvel post-credits scene which sees Goose, the domestic “cat” who ends up being a Flerken (an alien who can devour anything with it’s huge tentacles that appear from its mouth in moments of pressure), coughing up the Tesseract on Nick Fury’s desk. This scene is more of a comedy moment, but also reveals how the Tesseract ended up in the hands of S.H.I.E.L.D. again. We can only hope Goose will make further appearances in next month’s Endgame.
