Director Paul Feig has revealed that Melissa McCarthy’s character will be the loose “leader” of his all-female Ghostbusters crew.
McCarthy has been cast as one of the film’s four female leads alongside her Bridesmaids co-star Kristen Wiig and Saturday Night Live cast members Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Jones recently shared the first picture of the new all-female Ghostbusters crew assembled together.
During a new interview with IGN, Feig confirmed that his film will be an “ensemble piece”, but explained that “at the same time you need the one person that brings you into the group”, which will be Wiig’s character.
He then added: “Melissa is sort of the leader of the group, but everybody will be equal. I just love a deep bench like this. Every one of those women is strong and so funny. The hardest thing is going to be… keeping all of their stuff in the movie.”
Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters movie is set for release on July 22, 2016. Since the film was officially announced, Sony Pictures has revealed that a male-led Ghostbusters movie is also being developed. “That has nothing to do with us. That was a real surprise when that announcement came out,” Feig admitted during the new interview. “We’re just doing our thing and I can’t let that affect me. I don’t know how real it is.”
