Steve Carell has predicted that Anchorman fans may have a long wait for a third film.
Carell played weatherman Brick Tamland opposite Will Ferrell in 2004’s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, which was set in 1970s California, and its 2013 sequel Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, which found Burgundy working at a 24-hour news channel in 1980s New York.
Asked if Adam McKay, director and co-writer of both films, had approached him about making a third movie, Carell said on Good Morning Britain this morning: “No, we never discussed it, but I heard in an interviewthat he mentioned that he might have an idea for Anchorman 3. But it might not happen for 10 or 15 years, so take a big deep breath.”
Last month (December) McKay suggested that Anchorman 3 could focus on the rise of new media, with Ron Burgundy grappling with the internet boom in the late ’90s.
As Carell recalled this morning, McKay said at the time: “The only thing is by then Burgundy would be getting pretty old. So maybe it’s a movie we make in 10 years, when Will’s aged up and it actually makes sense that you can set it in 1997 or ’98.”
