The rapper is behind bars after pleading guilty to motoring offences...

Rapper DMX was last night (May 3) beginning a brief jail sentence after pleading guilty to motoring offences. He gave himself up to New York police yesterday morning over an outstanding arrest warrant.

DMX, real name Earl Simmons, pled guilty in Cheektowaga Justice Court to charges of driving with a suspended license, and was sentenced to 15 days in prison with no bail.

The warrant had been issued after DMX missed a scheduled court date on March 23, when he was to face charges relating to a March 3 arrest for driving without a license and possession of marijuana. His March 3 arrest had followed a concert in Buffalo, upstate New York, on the crisis-hit Ruff Ryders/Cash Money tour. He had failed to make the March 23 court date due to being in Houston on the same tour.

On top of the spell in prison, DMX was fined US$380 for associated minor driving offences and marijuana possession.

In a further twist, while DMX was being processed ready for his move to the Erie County Correctional Facility in New York, officers found a small quantity of marijuana in his cigarette packet. He was rearrested on another possession charge and fined US$250 while his lawyers launched an immediate appeal.

At present it is unclear how this will impact on his current sentence.
