Jack White, Royal Blood, Alt-J head up Day 2 at Coachella

Father John Misty, Kasabian, Tyler The Creator also play the Californian festival

Jack White headed up the second day of Coachella Festival last night (April 11).

The former White Stripes man played a ferocious set, which included material from The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, such as ‘Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground’, ‘Hello Operator’, ‘Ball and Biscuit’ and ‘Steady As She Goes’, as well as a cover of Otis Redding’s ‘I’ve Been Loving You Too Long’. “You can clap along,” said White before ‘We’re Going to Be Friends’. “I ain’t gonna be mad at you.”

Backed by a full band, including violin player Lillie Mae Rische, at one point White asked that the audience “”put your fucking phones down for five seconds.” He finished the epic set with ‘Seven Nation Army’, which saw a mass singalong from the huge crowd. Scroll down for a full setlist.

Earlier in the day Royal Blood played an early afternoon set which included fiery versions of ‘Figure It Out’, ‘Little Monster’ and ‘You Can Be So Cruel’ from last year’s self-titled debut LP. The band, who are still relatively unknown in the US, played a powerful gig, which saw a mini mosh pit in front of the stage.

“Coachella, we’re your new friends from England,” said frontman Mike Kerr to cheers. “Now make some fucking noise!” Father John Misty played one of the most entertaining sets of the weekend, covering Leonard Cohen’s ‘I’m Your Man’ while serenading a crowd member on bended knee, surrounded by balloons and offering her a giant teddy bear.

He prefixed ‘Bored In The USA’ by joking “I feel bad, I’m going to have to play a sarcastic ballad and these dance acts are going to be like ‘I can’t hear anything’.” In front of a flashing ‘No Photography’ sign, the singer-songwriter also commented: “I’m so honoured to have all the depressive sad bastards here. We need some representation, people who don’t really like going out in the sun.”

Later, on the main Coachella stage Alt-J played to one of the biggest crowds of their career. The band’s set drew from both their albums and included a punchy ‘Left Hand Free’ and melodic ‘Matilda’, which saw frontman Joe Newman asking the crowd to sing along.

Run The Jewels were joined by a host of special guests for their set, including Rage Against The Machine’s Zach de la Rocha and Blink-182’s Travis Barker. Click here to read a full report from the show.
