R Kelly released from jail after posting $100,000 bail

R Kelly has been released from jail in Chicago after posting his $100,000 (£76,000) bail, police have confirmed.

The rapper initially turned himself into authorities on Friday night (February 22) and has pled not guilty to 10 accounts of aggravated sexual abuse, after he was charged with the offences last week. The charges are thought to involve four underage girls who have accused Kelly of abuse between a period of 1998 to 2010.

Videos posted on Twitter show Kelly leaving on Monday after spending the weekend in jail, but he did not speak to media as he left the facility.

One of the allegations reportedly involves a woman that he met at a restaurant on her 16th birthday, and another reportedly occurred when she asked for his autograph. Kelly has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing.

The offences allegedly occurred in Cook County, Illinois, where Kelly yesterday faced a lawsuit from a woman named Heather Williams who claims Kelly sexually abused her in 1998 when she was 16 years old.

Claims of sexual misconduct by Kelly began in 1994, when he reportedly married Aaliyah when she was only 15. The marriage was annulled when Aaliyah’s parents discovered the pair were married, with Kelly saying he was unaware of his fellow R&B singer’s age.

The singer has since been accused of underage sex in 2008, when he was found not guilty of 14 charges of child pornography. Some of these charges related to a video from 2002 discovered by Michael Avenatti, which claimed to show Kelly urinating on a 14-year-old girl. Avenatti has stated that the three recent videos are different than the tape from 2002.

Last week, lawyer Michael Avenatti also said he had evidence of a further video purporting to show Kelly’s involvement with minors. “We have become aware of the existence of a third tape, that allegedly shows further acts of sexual abuse of an underage girl by R Kelly, which we are presently working to recover and turnover to law enforcement,” he tweeted.

Claims of Kelly’s sexual activity with underage girls have resurfaced since the Lifetime documentary series Surviving R Kelly was aired in January. Buzzfeed had previously reported in 2017 that Kelly ran a sex cult. He has constantly denied all wrongdoing.
