The singer was forced to cancel his Australian tour earlier this week
Sam Smith has issued an update to fans after recently suffering a small vocal cord haemorrhage.
Earlier this week, the Grammy Award winner was forced to cancel the remainder of his Australian tour after falling ill. Now, he has posted a statement to Instagram, writing that he is “insanely relaxed” and hasn’t “spoken a word in three days”.
The post reads in full: “Just to let all my beautiful fans know, I’m ok. I am insanely relaxed and am somewhere in the middle of Australia with no phone, no laptop and I haven’t spoken a word in three days. Trying my absolute best to be back on my feet and singing for next week. So amazing to have this time to turn off, but it does make me realise how much I love what I do, and how much I miss you all when I’m not on stage. I hope you are all happy and healthy wherever you are. I’m gonna go back to my black and white movies and pretend I’m Judy Garland for a few more days xx”
The singer revealed this week that doctors had ordered him to rest for fear the condition might become more serious. Smith had started his tour last Saturday (April 25) at Brisbane’s Riverstage and played Monday night for the first of two dates at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion. His second show at the venue, as well as sold out dates in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth have now been cancelled, though they will be rescheduled for later this year.
“I am deeply, deeply saddened to tell my Australian fans, I have to cancel my Australian tour,” wrote Smith in a statement earlier in the week. “I have been vocally exhausted for a while now however last night in Sydney I had a small hemorrhage on my vocal cords. The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal chords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge long-term issue. I am so sorry to all who have bought tickets, I truly am. This kills me.”
It was recently reported that Rihanna was interested in working with Smith. “No matter how busy we are, when two artists want to work together they make it happen,” Rihanna has said. “He is such a beautiful songwriter, but more important than that, he is an absolutely beautiful person, and that comes across in his songs.”
