Stevie Wonder has been inducted into the Apollo Theater Hall Of Fame in New York.
The soul legend was honoured at the theatre’s spring gala on Monday (June 13), with Tony Bennett presenting him a special award. Wonder performed at the event alongside Bennett, Doug E Fresh and Paul Shaffer.
He joins an honour roll that includes Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown and Michael Jackson, according to the Associated Press.
Speaking after his induction, Wonder said: “It’s a moment to cherish and remember, relishing in the memories of the times I’ve been at the Apollo, as well as this night, the great people that came out to support me being here. It’s a great thing to be one of those people in the Hall Of Fame for the Apollo.”
Wonder started his career at the theatre in 1962 aged just 12 years old, when he was known as ‘Little Stevie Wonder’. Last year, he headlined Glastonbury, joined by Michael Eavis for a special version of ‘Happy Birthday’.
