Rihanna, Skrillex and Beyonce also took home gongs at last night's (September 6) ceremony
The UK boyband took home the award for Best Pop Video, Best New Artist and Most Share Worthy video, all for the promo for their huge hit ‘What Makes You Beautiful’.
Coldplay also picked up an award, winning Best Rock Video for their single ‘Paradise’, which beat off competition from Jack White, The Black Keys and Linkin Park to take the award.
MIA also won two awards, scooping the gongs for Best Cinematography and Best Direction for her video for ‘Bad Girls’. Skrillex was also honoured, winning Best Visual Effects for his video for ‘First Of The Year (Equinox)’, while Beyonce won the Best Editing award for her track ‘Countdown’.
Controversial singer Chris Brown also won two awards, picking up Best Male Video and Best Choreography for ‘Turn Up The Music’. His ex-girlfriend Rihanna took home the big award of the night, scooping the Video Of The Year Award for ‘We Found Love’.
Others winners were Drake and Lil Wayne, who got Best Hip-Hop Video for ‘HYFR’, Nicki Minaj, who won Best Female Video for ‘Starships, Katy Perry, who received Best Art Direction for her video for ‘Wide Awake’, Demi Lovato, who was given the Best Video With A Message Award for ‘Skyscraper’, and Calvin Harris, who won Best Electronic Dance Video for ‘Feels So Close’.
Green Day performed their new track ‘Let Yourself Go’ at the ceremony, while Rihanna performed both ‘We Found Love’ and a new version of her track ‘Cockiness’ with rapper A$AP Rocky. Lil Wayne debuted new material with ‘No Worries’ as did Alicia Keys who performed ‘Girl On Fire’.
Pink, Taylor Swift, 2Chainz, Calvin Harris, Frank Ocean and One Direction all played live during the evening. The show was hosted by comedian Kevin Hart and took place in the Los Angeles Staples Center.
