Netflix deny changing ‘The Notebook’ ending after alternate version appears on streaming site

The crucial final scene is different in the version that appeared on Netflix

Netflix have denied changing the ending of The Notebook after fans complained that the film’s final scene was completely different.

The film, which stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, follows the story of Noah and Allie and their relationship. The final scene sees the couple in their old age, dying in bed in each other’s arms.

However, the version of the movie that appeared on Netflix didn’t feature that final scene. Instead, the film closed with a shot of birds flying over a lake. Fans of the film weren’t impressed, with one tweeting: “the best part of watching it is having your heart break at the end.”

Now, Netflix have responded to the complaints on their official Twitter page. “Things you should know,” they wrote. “We did not edit the notebook. An alternate version exists and was supplied to us. We are getting to the bottom of it asap. Apparently some films have more than one ending?!”

Author Nicholas Sparks, who wrote the book on which the film is based, previously revealed no one wanted to play the character of Noah before Gosling got involved.

“It was incredibly hard to find an actor willing to play Noah,” Sparks said. “It was really interesting because a lot of the actors said, ‘Well, what’s Noah’s arc?’ It’s a guy who falls in love and then he just kinda does nothing, and then waits for her to show up and then he’s there and he’s still in love and then at the end of the film, well, he’s still in love. Where’s the arc?

“Ryan Gosling came in and he really brought that story to life and showed what you can do even if the arc was relatively minimal.”

In 2015, it was reported that The Notebook was to be adapted into a TV series. Two years later, The CW president Mark Pedowitz suggested the plans had stalled, saying: “We did not find another writer to go back in so at the moment it’s in the banks.”
