‘Game Of Thrones’ Joe Dempsie originally auditioned to play Jon Snow

“My audition for Gendry is the worst I’d ever done."

Game Of Thrones star Joe Dempsie has revealed how he tried to bag the role of Jon Snow before his “worst ever audition” eventually landed him the role of Gendry.

The British actor was speaking at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival in London on Sunday, only hours before the HBO giant returned for its eighth and final season.

Describing his attempt to bag the role, which eventually went to Kit Harington, Joe said: ” I auditioned for Jon Snow eventually, pretty much every actor of a certain age went for it. 18 months after that I auditioned for Pip and another of Jon’s mates at the wall.”

He continued: “My audition for Gendry is the worst I’d ever done, after every scene there was silence and they said they were worried nobody would understand me.”

While Harington was eventually chosen for the now iconic role, Dempsie soon became a fan favourite as Gendry.

And while Gendry only reappeared in season seven after a four year absence, Joe says his return was never in doubt.

“At the end of season three when they said Gendry would disappear for a while, they did say the plan was for me to come back,” he said. “So I always had that in the back of my mind. They wanted to leave it long enough that people started to forget about him, so him coming back was a surprise.

“In some ways I think Twitter got me my job back, they wanted fans to forget about Gendry but they underestimated them.”

He added: “The longer a loose end is left untied the more conspicuous it gets rather than just fading from memory.”

Gendry returned once more last night in the first episode of Game of Thrones’ final season. The same episode also saw viewers learning the grisly fate that befell the character played by Ed Sheeran in a brief 2017 cameo.
