“What does punk mean in 2019? I think that it is less about a style of music or the way that you dress and more about how you approach your life,” Blink 182‘s Mark Hoppus tells NME. “I’ve always kind of felt like that. There’s been a punk rock attitude in hip-hop forever. There are punk rock country artists. The blurring of the lines in musical genres right now is really exciting and cool.”
All Time Low‘s Alex Gaskarth agrees: “The mentality of ‘punk’ music got adopted by other genres. I think rock is now playing catch-up to that.”
It’s that “blurring of the lines” and meeting of minds that saw the pair come together to form supergroup Simple Creatures – an outlet for the pair to explore what they call “trash-pop” while still remaining true to their punk ideology.
To really get under the skin of Simple Creatures and find out what makes them tick, we asked them to tackle our ‘Band Vs Band’ questions and go head to head to talk about how they met, bad haircuts, Mark’s love of Pokemon Go, what they get up to when they hang out, their craziest night out together, their love/hate of karaoke, the one band they bond over, their favourite songs by each other, the first album they ever bought, their hidden talents and much, much more. Check it out in the video above.
Simple Creatures’ ‘Strange Love EP’ is out now. The band return to the UK to perform at Download Festival in June.
